‘For the first time I found Portuguese lessons easy to follow, beautifully explained and perfectly pitched at my level. I was enjoying the learning process and my confidence grew as did my abilities.’

Level 3

intermediate

The level 1 beginners class focuses on learning new words and phrases that will be instantly useful to you in your life here.

You will learn how to pronounce the individual sounds within words in Portuguese, and we will take some time to 'learn to learn', which is often the major challenge for those new to learning a language. I will pass on invaluable tips and shortcuts and guide you to efficient learning.

Each lesson takes a topic (e.g. shopping, food, travel, family).  We study and practice vocabulary, and phrases related to the topic,  listen to dialogues and you get the opportunity to speak and practice the new items in the activities and games in the class.   After each lesson I'll send you sets of virtual flashcards (with audio) of most of the material we have covered so you can go review and study after class in a fun way.

If you are new to Portugal or Portuguese, or are looking to re-start after unsuccessful attempt(s) this is the class for you.

‘Emma’s classes are easy to stay focused and also easy to absorb grammar and vocabulary that can actually be put to use’

I recommend 'Beginning Portuguese' by Sue Tyson Ward of the Practise Makes Perfect series to accompany these lessons if you would like to do extra practise between classes.

Classroom sessions - Ansião Tuesday mornings, Chãos Wednesday mornings from March and May 2019
Level 1: 9.15-10.30

The level 2 elementary class is aimed at those of you who have studied a bit and want to now start expressing yourself better, putting longer sentences together and sounding more natural.

The classes cover a few key areas that will enable you to be more cohesive and put your sentences together in a 'Portuguese' rather than 'English' way, looking at things like the order of phrases and the linking words for example.

We’ll be looking at texts, doing plenty of listening exercises to help with the ongoing task of deciphering exactly what native Portuguese speakers are saying :)  And of course lots of speaking and pronunciation exercises in the activities I put together for you.  Most classes have accompanying sets of virtual flashcards with audio so you can study the  material we have covered after class.

If you have studied a little and are looking to move from the words and phrases to the sentences and participating in conversations then this is the class for you.

‘We look forward to our weekly lessons – there is a relaxed atmosphere in the class - but we have to work hard too’

I recommend 'Passaporte para Português 1 Caderno de Exercícios' by the publisher Lidel to accompany these classes if you would like additional practise after class.

Level 2: 10.30-11.45

The level 3 intermediate class pushes you on and develops fluency in Portuguese,

The focus here is on speaking - using and developing the language you know.  We will discuss situations, do roleplays and activities to practise and speak in the 'safe' classroom environment.

I will 'feed' you useful language, point out shortcuts you can use to free up thinking time and make pertinent suggestions on how you can get speaking and sounding more Portuguese, with the language flowing more naturally.  We will be looking at longer texts and more complex dialogues to expose you to the language you need to pick up to gain fluency. and incorporate work on areas that are needed at this level such as prepositions, and idiomatic phrases, but the main focus is on speaking and using what you know!

If you have been studying for a while and feel you are not speaking and / or understanding as much as you would like although you feel should be capable of it, then this is a great class for you.

‘Run extremely well and informatively whilst being relaxed enough not to feel under any pressure.  I really look forward to attending the weekly class – Thanks’

I recommend 'Passaporte para Português 2 Caderno de Exercícios' by the publisher Lidel to accompany these classes if you would like additional practise after class.

What do students think?  Some comments!

the very reasonable fee she charges has made it a worthwhile and painless investment

Great value for money! We will be attending Emma’s classes for a while yet!

it is truly a joy following the well prepared lessons

I have not only learnt some valuable Portuguese, I have also had some fun.

I was concerned about going on my own, however there was no need, as I have been made welcome by Emma and all others that attend. My advice would be to give it a go.

lessons are always upbeat and fun and it is a great environment to learn

I can honestly say I enjoy the Portuguese lessons with Emma. She adapts the content to suit different learning styles and levels.

while I still don’t have a natural aptitude for learning languages, I have a good teacher this time, and my Portuguese, “mais ou menos”, is improving
